Our Hair Clippings Are Making a Difference
At Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, nothing goes to waste not even your hair! Thanks to our partnership with the incredible Green Salon Collective, our hair clippings are recycled in over 10 different innovative ways, from practical solutions to pure creative magic.
We love seeing where our hair ends up, and sometimes it’s in the most unexpected places. Artist Anouska Samms creates stunning textile and ceramic pieces using red and auburn hair collected from salons just like ours. Her work is not only beautiful, but it also gives discarded hair a brand-new life as part of contemporary art.
University student Merryn has been experimenting with hair blended with wool to create knitted garments, and has even used our clippings to help grow mycelium and pink oyster mushrooms! It’s creativity and sustainability combined in the most fascinating way.
One of the latest and most exciting projects comes from Matter of Trust in Norfolk, where over a tonne of salon hair was transformed into mulch for use on a local farm. And guess what? Spring barley shoots are already sprouting! Hair mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds all without any chemical intervention.
Earth Day at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing – Sustainable Hairdressing
Did you know the very first Earth Day took place back in 1970? It began in the United States, where 20 million people took to the streets to raise awareness about major environmental concerns like oil spills, polluted rivers, and air pollution. Since then, Earth Day has become a global movement, with a different theme each year to spotlight key environmental issues.
This year’s theme was ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, focusing on the importance of renewable energy, and here at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing in Bury St Edmunds, we’re proud to be doing our bit for a greener future, every day.
Here’s how we combine fabulous hair with planet-friendly practices:
Colour with a Conscience
We use Aveda hair colour, which comes in infinitely recyclable aluminium tubes. That means less waste and more responsible beauty, without sacrificing stunning results.
Recycling Champions
Thanks to our partnership with the Green Salon Collective, we recycle everything from highlighting foils to hair cuttings. What would once head to landfill now gets a second life, helping reduce our environmental footprint.
We also use clearly labelled recycling bins in the salon, making it easy to separate waste ready for regular eco-collections.
From Bean to Green
Our used coffee grounds are available free to clients who may use them in hanging baskets to improve soil health as they act as a natural fertiliser.
Lighting the Way Efficiently
We’ve upgraded our salon with LED lighting throughout, plus sensor lighting in restrooms, the office, and stockrooms to help cut down on unnecessary energy use.
Eco-Friendly Washing
Our shampoo rooms now feature eco shower heads, which reduce water usage without compromising that relaxing salon experience.
