Bohemian Hairstyles for Summer

The Ultimate Hair Trend for Summer: Boho Waves at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, Bury St Edmunds

Citing hippy rock & roll and Californian influences, the ‘Boho Waves’ hair trend allows us to channel our inner cool for the perfectly undone look!

The boho wavy hairstyle is perfect for music festivals, fun days on the beach or simply because you’re harnessing your inner free-spirited hippy!  The team at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing in Bury St Edmunds round up the hottest wavy hairstyles to try this season.

We can recreate any of these dreamy looks.  Simply give us a call on 01284 754066.

Sexy Waves with a 1970s Vibe

bohemian wavy hairstyles, Bury St Edmunds hair salonThe effortless sexuality of the ’60s and ’70s flower power era, serves to inspire this sensual look.

We can add subtle volume at the crown and a lot of texture combined with undone waves to give that hint of edginess for a sexy, flirty hairstyle.

To get this look absolutely right, add a centre parting, no fringe and a hippy headband or flower circlet!

Boho Beach Babe Hairstyles

bohemian wavy hairstyles, Bury St Edmunds hair salonEvoke your inner goddess and celebrate all things sun and sea with some soft, deconstructed, flowing waves.

For the ultimate beach babe look, take sections of your hair, varying in size and wrap around your styling tong, holding for around 3-5 seconds. (Add your hair protection spray first though!)

Once the entire hair has been done, you can keep your waves tight or run your fingers through them for a more tousled look.

Hippy-Chick Curly Hair

bohemian wavy hairstyles, Bury St Edmunds hair salonInspired by the long, carefree hair worn by women during the mid-60s hippie movement, the imperfect curl is one of the hottest looks at the moment.

Transform your curls into relaxed, unravelled waves by brushing them through after styling.

This soft look pairs well with natural skin, brushed eyebrows and bare lips.

Soft, Messy Wavy Hair

bohemian wavy hairstyles, Bury St Edmunds hair salonDuring the late 1960s and early 1970s, festivals such as Woodstock and Glastonbury saw women let their hair flow naturally into tousled barely there waves.

This look is a bit messy and your curl has almost lost its wave.  Wear your hair in a centre parting and you’ll have this look nailed!

If your hair needs a boost, why not add a loose plait.  This will help you retain the curl once you remove the plait.

Bohemian Braids & Curls

braids and curly hairstyles, bury st edmunds hair salonBraids have had a revolution in the past couple of years. From Fishtails to Waterfalls to chunky messy braids, there are plenty of new and exciting plaited looks to try out.

Best of all? A firm braid will look good all day long – PERFECT for those long festival days!

No good at braiding? Not to worry. Add a few simple plaits to your messy, flowing, boho locks to achieve a similar look in a matter of seconds.

Summer Hair Colour Trends

5 Hot Summer Hair Colours at Gavin Ashley Hair Salon, Bury St Edmunds

If you’re looking for a cool new look this summer, why not start with a pop of hair colour?  There are so many superb hair colour trends this year, and we’re in love with them all. Here are five of our faves!

  1. Blonde Hair Colours For Summer

Buttery blondes are back, and it’s got such a fun, beachy vibe – right in time for the warm weather!

The softer blonde tones are in direct contrast to the icy cold blonde hair trends of recent years, and they look great on girls, teens and women of all ages.

We can find the perfect blonde to suit your skin colouring so why not book in for a hair colour consultation and let our hair colour experts work their magic on your hair?

  1. Ombre or Balayage Deliberate Roots Hair Trend

If you’re on a bit of a budget but you’re still sensible enough to get your hair coloured in a salon and not from a box, this deliberate roots hair trend can be an absolute lifesaver.

All you have to do is ask one of our expert colour technicians to create a gorgeous ombre or balayage hair look for you.

Sun-kissed hair is also a great choice for summer and there are so many techniques we can use to get the look you’re after.

  1. Grey Hair For Young Women

The world truly has gone mad for grey hair!  Grey hair is the ultimate in ‘granny chic’.

Ask your stylist if this look will suit you – they’ll give you some honest advice!

It can have a silver or grey hue or you can veer more towards a platinum blonde with icy tones.

  1. Fashion Hair Colours

Summer is a great time to have some fun with your hair colour and it doesn’t get more fun than with pastel hair colours.

Baby pinks, lilacs and the hottest of colours – denim blue –  can be hard to achieve at home so ask your colour technician at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing to talk you through what can be achieved with your hair.

  1. Natural Hair Colours

We don’t mean ‘mousy brown’, we’re talking about giving your hair a lift with lowlights or highlights.  Add some rich reds to brown hair, lift fair hair with golden highlights and put some chocolate browns into very dark hair.

Whatever hair colour you decide upon, give Gavin Ashley Hairdressing a call on 01284 754066 to book your hair appointment.

Cool Hair Cuts For Men

Men’s Hair Trends at Gavin Ashley Hair Salon, Bury St Edmunds

Calling all men!  If you’ve been wearing the same hairstyle for years, why not have a change? We take a look at the top five fashion-forward hairstyles for men to inspire you when it’s time for your next hair cut at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing in Bury St Edmunds.

1. The Buzz Cut

The Buzz Cut is shaved or very short at the sides, with hair on top swept forward.

Remember the early version which sparked a generation of young men wearing hair swept over their faces?  This is a cooler update on that style!

The short length makes it easy to maintain and this style looks great when you work in a little texture for a messy, understated look.

2. The Skin Fade with Quiff

The basic concept of a skin fade is to have your hair shaved or cut very short at the sides but getting longer as it reaches the top of your hair.  Your hair on top will be much longer and can be styled into a quiff, worn flat or worn in spikes or with texture.

Ask your stylist for a #2 or #3 on the sides and to fade your hair from there upwards so it gets slightly longer as it reaches the top.  Anything longer than shaved sides and you won’t get this look.

There should still be some length on top, but it’s up to you as to how high you wear your quiff.

3. The Disconnected Undercut

With the Disconnected Undercut, the sides of the hair are either cut extremely short or shaved – usually to one length all round – which creates a noticeable contrast between the sides and the top of the hair.  Hence the title ‘Disconnected’.

If you are in doubt as to which style will suit you, talk to your stylist.  We can help you work out the perfect hair cut for you.

4. Beards

Less of a hairstyle and more about facial hair but we have to report that beards are likely to remain a firm favourite with gents – at least until Summer 2016.

If you fancy a change, hide that razor and start growing your beard now!

Looking for a great men’s hairstyle to match your bearded look?  Wear your hair a little longer, with a side parting and slick it back with some pomade, or ask for a disconnected style like the image here (see left).

5. Curly Hair For Gents

If you have curly or wavy hair it will need regular maintenance to look good.  Your stylist can create a fabulous and masculine hairstyle by cutting layers into your curls to make it more manageable.

We can also create an undercut or skin fade to give you an on-trend look.

When it comes to styling curly hair, our expert stylists can show you the right hair products and give you some great styling tips.

Hairstyles With Fringes

Fringe Benefits at Gavin Ashley Hair in Bury St Edmunds

Do you fancy a new hairstyle but you’re not ready to have your hair cut into a cool short style? Maybe your first step towards change should be a fringe!

If you’re ready for a change with your hairstyle or colour, talk to your Gavin Ashley hair stylist who can tell you which fringe will work best with your face shape…

Eye Skimming Fringes

Eye skimming fringes are super sexy and look great if you have a longer face shape.

Ask your stylist to cut you a fringe that skims just below your eyebrows for an uber cook look.  It can be worn blunt and straight, or choppy and a little bit messy.

Fancy a change?  Part your fringe in the middle and wear it with a gap in the middle… just as though you’ve opened the curtains in the morning!

The 1970s Fringe

The trend for all things 1970s continues into 2016.  Check out the High Street shops and you’ll see lots of suede and fringing.

When it comes to your hair, wear it in a relaxed, slightly wavy style and add a longer fringe with a flick at each end.

Change up your style with a side parting or a centre parting. Both work equally well with the flicked fringe.  If in doubt, ask your stylist for advice.

Micro Fringes

The micro fringe is a bold statement so talk to your stylist for advice on whether this look will work with your facial features.

Super short fringes can look particularly good if you have a fuller or round face.

Add a pop of colour to give it even more interest and you’ll be turning heads in no time at all!

Asymmetric Fringes

Another edgy look is the asymmetric fringe where your fringe is longer on one side.

If you’re unsure about whether this look is right for you, why not try the look out first?  Ask your stylist to cut it into an asymmetric shape but make sure you don’t go too short on the shorter side…

You can then simply opt for an eye-skimming fringe instead if you feel the look is not quite right for you!

Quiffed Fringes

We are growing more experimental with our hair and one of the biggest statements when it comes to your fringe is a quiff!

This is a super cool hairstyle that is not for the faint-hearted!  You can form a quiff on a longer fringe by blow drying it in an upwards direction and fixing it into place with some hair product. If your fringe is shorter, you could opt for a spiked fringe instead!

Whatever you decide, have fun and experiment with your fringe and hair for a new look every now and then.

Give Your Hairstyle Staying Power

Keep Your Hair Looking Perfect at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, Bury St Edmunds

You know you can rely on the hairdressing experts at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing in Bury St Edmunds to give you a great hair cut and colour, but how can you keep your hairstyle looking great on those days in between your salon visit?

We give you some top tips to give your hairstyle extra staying power…

Stop Your Upstyle Securely In Place

Keep your upstyle securely in place by doubling up on bobby pins, placing them in a criss-cross to hold your hair securely.

If you’re worried about the pins showing, either use pretty jewelled pins or cover up the bobby pins with a lovely hair accessory.

Tame any flyaway hair  by spraying hairspray onto your hair brush and running it through your hair.  Perfect if you want a slick and perfectly polished updo.

Check out some of the cool faux hair pieces that you can add to your upstyle to make it more interesting.  Maybe add a thick plait as a halo braid, or some clip in (or real) hair extensions for volume or a pop of extra colour.

Keep The Waves In Your Curly Hair

After a couple of hours of dancing, your curly hairstyle may begin to drop and (eek) even become a bit frizzy.

The solution?  Curls will hold better in hair that is a day old (so not newly washed) as your hair will not be soft and slippery.

Curl your hair in sections and apply a setting lotion to each section before curling your hair with a wand or tongs.  Pin your curl in place so it is tightly wrapped up and let it cool before releasing it.

Finish with some hair spray.

Do not be tempted to fiddle with your hair as this will cause the curls to drop out faster.

Stop Your Braids From Slipping Out

Braids can sometimes misbehave and slip from their original position.  This is a particular problem for women with fine or thin hair, but does also happen if you have thicker hair.  Try these tips to solve this issue:

Add some product to your hair to make it grip.  A hair salt spray or  dry shampoo work well.

Put some hairspray onto your hair and blow dry it into shape.

Braid your hair as tightly as you want but bear in mind that tighter plaits will stay in place for longer than loose plaits.

Add some pins to the first part of your plait to hold it in place.  You can always hide any pins that are showing by adding some pretty hair accessories to your braid, such as a fake flower.

Hair Care Tips & Tricks

Hair Care & Styling Tips from Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, Bury St Edmunds

Fed up with limp hair?  Cursed with thick hair that’s in a tangle?  Does hair loss give you sleepless nights?

We all have different hair issues but there is usually something that can be done to improve the situation.  Check out Gavin Ashley‘s expert tips & tricks to help you get the best from your hair…

PROTECT COLOURED HAIR

  • Use products specifically designed for colour-treated hair.
  • After having your hair professionally coloured, wait up to three days if you can before washing it to allow the colour to absorb completely.
  • Protect your hair colour from pool chlorine, sea salt, UV light (tanning beds)
  • Condition, condition, condition.

REPAIR DAMAGED HAIR

hair care tips, Farnham hair salon Ruby ManeThere are now some fantastic in-salon hair repair treatments such as the incredible OLAPLEX which repairs even the most over-processed and dry hair.

You could also try this rather unconventional tip!  When it comes to drying your hair, avoid towel drying and use an over-sized 100% cotton t-shirt instead.  This is said to reduce hair breakage and help control frizz and flyaways.

ADD VOLUME TO LIMP HAIR

hair care tips, Farnham hair salon Ruby ManeThere really is no need to suffer from limp and lifeless hair these days.  Ask your stylist to recommend the right shampoo, conditioning and styling products to give your hair more volume and lift.  Very often it’s simply the fact that you’re using the wrong hair conditioner which is weighing down your hair.

A recent innovation in hair care includes pre-shampoo conditioning treatments.  This is where conditioners are applied BEFORE you shampoo your hair. Why not give it a go at home and apply your conditioner before your shampoo to see if it gives your locks a lift.

GIVE FINE HAIR A BOOST AT THE ROOTS

Fed up with fine hair that lies flat on your head after you’ve styled it?  Try these tips:

  • Dry your hair upside down, working your fingers into the roots of your hair to give it lift
  • Apply a fine hair boosting spray – ask your stylist for their recommendation on which products will work best on your hair.
  • For a special occasion, spritz your hair with a specially formulated ‘salt spray’ for hair to give it added volume.
  • Add a burst of dry shampoo to give your roots a lift

DETANGLE HAIR MORE EASILY

Detangling curly hair, Farnham hair salonTangled hair that is cursed with tiny little knots can literally be a pain!  While we can’t promise you’ll never have a tangle again, we’d recommend you invest in a Tangle Teezer detangling brush and try the following…

Gently brush your hair before you shower to get rid of as many tangles as possible because it will only become more tangled as you work your hair into a lather.

Invest in a satin cover for your pillow.  Your hair is much less likely to get in a mess as you sleep and you’ll find it looks a lot shinier when you wake up too!

HAIR LOSS & THINNING HAIR TIPS

Hair loss can be a cause of great distress for both men and women and there are several great products on the market aimed at improving the density of your hair and encouraging hair growth.

We also have some expert tips to encourage thicker hair:

  • Keep your hair as clean as possible to avoid weighing it down
  • Gently brush your hair before you shower to avoid tangles and breakage during the lathering process
  • Gently dry your hair (try drying it with a 100% cotton t-shirt for a delicate drying technique)
  • Scrunch your hair while drying it to add volume
  • Never pull your hair back into tight ponytails, buns or plaits – keep it loose
  • Massage your scalp to increase circulation
  • When blow drying, lift your hair at the roots and give your hair a burst of cold air.

Winter Hair Care

Hair Care During Winter at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, Bury St Edmunds

Winter Hair CareThe cold winter months can play havoc with your hair so now is the time to winter-proof your locks.

The combination of indoor heating and cold weather outside can result in dry hair that is prone to split ends and breakage, so now is the time to follow the Gavin Ashley Hairdressing Top Tips For Healthy Winter Hair.

TIP 1: Have an in-salon deep conditioning treatment once a week

Dry and brittle hair needs an injection of moisture. You can buy some good conditioners over the counter, but if you’re looking for longer-lasting results, have an in-salon treatment.

TIP 2: Avoid washing your hair too much

Keep your hair washing to a minimum.  Wash your hair two or three times a week rather than every day. If you can bear it, wash your hair in cool water rather than hot water as the heat will dry out your hair.

TIP 3: Reduce the use of heating appliances

Cut down on the use of heating appliances such as hairdryers, styling wands and tongs because these can dry out your hair and cause it to break. If you have to style your hair, smooth some heat protection cream through it first. Split ends love to be treated with a frizz serum or, even better, have your hair trimmed at Gavin Ashley Hairdressing.

TIP 4: Dry your hair before leaving home

Make sure your hair is completely dry before you go outside into the cold air. The cold air will dry out your hair and make it more likely to break.

Give your hair further protection by hiding it away beneath a hat or scarf.   Silk scarves are a brilliant way of protecting your hair and your hairstyle should remain pretty much intact underneath it!

TIP 5: Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

We all know now that we should be eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day for a healthy diet… but did you know that the vitamins in your 5-a-day will also help your hair to become shinier and stronger?
